About this artwork
Gabrielle d'Estrées and one of her sisters is a double portrait by an unknown painter. It shows Gabrielle d'Estrées, mistress of Henry IV, and presumably her sister Julienne-Hippolyte, the Duchess of Villars, with a very exquisite grip of one hand on the breast of the other. This handle has fascinated me for a long time and one day I brought my interpretation of the theme to the canvas.
Gabrielle d'Estrées' grip on her nipple is often interpreted… as an indication of pregnancy. Another interpretation is that the image refers to Henry IV's changing mistresses.
Whatever hidden messages the unknown painter had in mind, the tingling eroticism of this seemingly cool scene is unmistakable. And from millennium to millennium, the female body will always be an inspiration and driving force for visual artists. I'm happy to sign that.
