About this artwork
The scene is taken from Gérard Oury's film 'La grande vadrouille' of 1966. It takes place during the Second World War in occupied France and tells the story of two French people - totally opposed by their characters and their social origins - finding themselves obliged to help a small group of British airmen to reach the free zone, while being pursued by the Germans. These two French people are interpreted by Bourvil and Louis de Funès who play respectively… a somewhat naive house painter and a conductor of the Paris Opera very cantankerous and imbued with himself. The scene takes place in a Turkish bath where the two French must meet the English airmen. The rallying sign is the song 'Tea for Two' which Louis de Funès sings discreetly.
« What's the point of trying to reinvent images when those around us are so beautiful, and all we have to do is reproduce them as faithfully as possible. »
