The tops of the mountains and the gorges sleep,
the peaks and the cliffs,
and the families of animals, those who feed the black earth,
and the proud inhabitants of the mountains and the race of bees
and monsters in the depths of the purple sea;
flocks of broad-winged birds sleep.
Here is the ancient Greek text of this wonderful and suggestive fragment:
εὕδουσι δʼ… ὀρέων κορυφαί τε καὶ φάραγγες
πρώονές τε καὶ χαράδραι
φῦλά τʼ ἑρπέτ 'ὅσα τρέφει μέλαινα γαῖα
θῆρές τʼ ὀρεσκώιοι καὶ γένος μελισσᾶν
καὶ κνώδαλʼ ἐν βένθεσσι πορφυρέας ἁλός ·
