About this artwork
This Painting is one of the pieces for my solo show at Sophiella Gallery in Mobile, AL opening June 12, 2026. It will be available for purchase from the Gallery June 1. I have completed 28 works for this show since last August.
The theme, What's in the Grass? is meant as a metaphor for finding beauty in the most ordinary places and moments in life. I've painted them sometimes as icons of sorts, attributing a kind of sacredness to the common and… sometimes unnoticed things that pass through our lives. It's kind of a new take on 'stop and smell the roses'.
All the paintings in this series are oil on canvas or panel. I have 6 small embroidered pieces of the same theme in the show as well.
Billie Bourgeois is a painter with over 70 years of experience and an MFA in painting and drawing from Louisiana State University, working with a variety of mediums. She specializes in gestural, intuitive techniques, favoring abstract botanical subjects and semi-abstract landscapes, still lifes, and portraits; her style is characterized by lively, energetic marks and a high-key palette tempered with neutrals. Through her bold, expressive work, she evokes a sense of vibrant discovery and celebrates the beauty found in unexpected, ordinary places.
