About this artwork
The painting Nostalgia is about memories from my grandmothers garden.
Through the destruction of the subject where composition and perspective are broken down into rhythms, surfaces and brush strokes, I focuses on the intuitive reading of nature and my own surroundings.
By using repetitions, different directions in brush strokes as well as different depth effects, I creates abstract landscapes that alternate between something recognisable and at… the same time completely unknown.
« I like to say that my paintings are memories of non-existent landscapes. »
Bjørnar Aaslund likens the process of beginning a painting to stepping into the white surface of untouched snow. The Norwegian artist's encounters with landscape and nature influence his art, which is processed and transformed, then reproduced as abstract forms of reality. Aaslund's compositions are emotional spaces built by layers of color – some transparent, others opaque – all forming the substance of the piece.
