About this artwork
As a child I lived in the countryside surrounded by lakes and ponds. I was very interested of the mirroring of the nature and light on the waters surface, also by the flowers and grass floating atop of the surface. I could spend hours laying flat on my stomach staring into the water to see the light changing, the wind making pattern and the colors changing.
Later as a young man I visited Guggenheim Museum in NYC, and saw the large painting of water… Lillies by Claude Monet. I was amazed by the beauty and the colors in his work.
My childhood memories and my first experience with Monet paintings are the inspiration for this serie of paintings I have named " Monet Revival" An homage to the painter and to nature.
« I like to say that my paintings are memories of non-existent landscapes. »
Bjørnar Aaslund likens the process of beginning a painting to stepping into the white surface of untouched snow. The Norwegian artist's encounters with landscape and nature influence his art, which is processed and transformed, then reproduced as abstract forms of reality. Aaslund's compositions are emotional spaces built by layers of color – some transparent, others opaque – all forming the substance of the piece.
