About this artwork
For me, cartography is the original discipline to combine science, mythology, and art. The ancient Cartographer, through the scientific method of observation and tedious measurements, often filled the gaps in their maps with imaginative and mysterious lands and creatures.
The tactile and sculptural surface with country abbreviations welcome the observer closer to translate the codes into country names and cultures. The juxtaposition of the frame… with an antique map and the painting with its modern borders is intentional. It serves as a reminder of how the boundaries that we create evolve.
Additional materials include glass beads, bent pine, and foam core.
The Frame: All my paintings are offset or surface mounted on a frame designed and constructed by me...utilizing skills developed at the large workshop within the Art Program at SDSU and as a former high-end Architectural Product Designer.
Breandan Lee, SDSU Art graduate with additional Science courses, was inspired to pursue a product design career by Furniture Design labs at SDSU led by Wendy Maruyama. Beginning as a Designer for a high-end Architectural product manufacturer, he eventually landed a position as Technology Manager and Supervisor managing the largest communications Network in the U.S.. Keeping connected to his art passion throughout, Breandan’s professional technical career has now empowered him to pursue this passion full-time.
Embracing a highly textured pop-art style, his goal is to initially engage the viewer visually at a distance and draw them closer to the tactile paintings. Custom-built frames lift the painting off the wall and are uniquely designed and built for each painting by the artist to provide additional dimension. At the core of his fun creations is a curiosity and appreciation for how our world works and does it in a very expressive way.
