About this artwork
Layers of deep blues – ranging from near black to almost luminous white – form the spatial depth of this painting. Earthy sienna tones and fragments of gold leaf interrupt the surface. In the lower left, a radiant blue gathers intensity, while above it small pieces of gold seem to rise upward, like a quiet explosion unfolding in the background.
The graphic elements in the foreground act both as a frame and as a boundary. They suggest two identities… within an intimate relationship: close to one another, yet not fully merging. Between them lies a subtle tension between proximity and distance.
Écrin – a small casket meant to hold something precious – becomes a metaphor for this space between two people. Inside resides vulnerability and intimacy; outwardly, structure and composure remain visible. The painting inhabits this contradiction: between openness and protection, between encounter and separation.
Céline Dürst is a painter with an instinctive background in drawing and painting, specializing in expressive acrylics on canvas, often enhanced by tactile materials such as sand, gold leaf, and eggshells. Her technique combines layered, free-flowing pours and organic textures with carefully shaped structures, resulting in a striking interplay between spontaneity and intention. Through her abstract style, she seeks to translate complex emotions onto canvas, inviting viewers to discover their own interpretations, and ultimately, experience a transformation of feeling—loss or frustration may become newfound strength, vitality, or joy.
