About this artwork
This oil painting was inspired by a pas de deux by the British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. entitled "After the Rain." It was one of the most beautiful pieces of art I've seen, and I was particularly struck by the flesh tones of the two dancers and the woman's bright yellow hair, loose and flying around as they danced. I wanted to capture the movement of the dancers while also capturing the feel of bright light after a dark storm has passed.… I was thinking of rainstorms as being a metaphor for emotional storms, and the calm that arises afterward.
Carrie Elston is a painter with deep roots in New York’s dynamic art scene, trained at Yale and Hunter College, and celebrated for her abstract paintings. She employs loose, gestural brushwork, bold mark-making, and vivid layers of color, using erasure to excavate memories and emotion beneath the surface. Her distinctive process uncovers the psychic tension between action and undoing, revealing vulnerability and resilience. Elston’s work pulses with emotional honesty, inviting viewers to sense the internal excavation and courageous self-recognition she pours into every canvas.
