About this artwork
Outside the window, a terrace opens onto the sea. Inside...there's no interior, but a courtyard enclosed by a wall topped by dark, thick vegetation. There's a door in the wall. In the middle of the courtyard, in the foreground, is a pool of greenish water, and next to the window is an ancient statue of Aphrodite. A French bulldog, at her feet, gazes in the direction of the viewer.
Some of the themes my imagination returns to time and again are present… in the painting: the French window, the threshold separating the outside—sea and light—from the inside, which in this case includes a forest, the door in the wall leading to it, and a pool of still, deep water. A space, perhaps, more interior than physical. Then there's the power of feminine seduction, materialized in the statue of the goddess, and the dark dog, still, sitting on the edge of mystery.
Cecco Mariniello is an Italian artist whose paintings have been featured in numerous solo exhibitions nationally, as well as in France. The central themes in his work are Mediterranean myths and places of the soul where classicism meets with personal memory. Mariniello expresses beauty through classical forms coupled with the wildness of nature or with "the otherness of even more ancient presences". His surrealist inspired compositions are created using oils on canvas.
