About this artwork
María Izquierdo (María Cenobia Izquierdo Gutiérrez)
He was born on October 30, 1902, in San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco.
She was proudly a Mexican painter, one of the first women to exhibit her works outside of Mexico, in 1930.
His first exhibition took place at the Art Center Gallery in New York City.
His work is characterized by the use of intense colors and themes that include self-portraits, landscapes, nature, scenes from the world of… the circus and Mexican traditions, represented with a surrealist and expressionist style.
This work contains the elements of pride in being Mexican.
Being Mexican means being proud of our roots, the heritage of our land, our traditions, our food, and all the elements that make up our territory. Being Mexican is a privilege, a responsibility and a commitment to a nation full of hope and future.
« My experiences are an essential part of my work, in each stroke made I express feelings and emotions, reflecting how I enjoy life and each moment to the fullest. »
