About this artwork
The work attempts to depict the living conditions of people in a state of war (perhaps in Ukraine) without explicitly depicting destruction, death, suffering, or disaster. It shows two people on an evening day, trying to maintain their normal daily lives despite the threat of war. They stand in the garden behind their house, which bears some war damage, and gaze, perhaps fearfully, perhaps in despair, at the reddish tinge of fires on the horizon.…
They know for certain that the war and its consequences are drawing ever closer to them; the power lines are still intact. But they are not considering fleeing or leaving their home. They don't want to simply abandon their possessions—they have even planted vegetables and flowers in the garden. Their hope for a swift end to the terrible events still lives on—that is surely their greatest treasure! In this way, they preserve their humanity.
