About this artwork
For this series I based my reflection on the Chinese pictorial tradition of Shan shui, the representation of landscapes considered sacred in China, such as mountains, which are in fact, in most cultures, preeminent places of spiritual worship.
I draw the cracks in the rock, giving the stone its mineral character. the linen of the canvas contributes as a value and brings out the flat areas of white, it is sky and water which blend together to attract… the eye to the stone and its writing. As in Shan shui, white is also a path, a meander that guides the eye towards the interior of the painting
Clara Ramirez Katz was born in Medellin, Colombia. She moved to Paris in 1979, where she lives and works.
The artist first learned textile design at the École supérieure des arts appliqués et métiers d'arts (ENSAAMA), then continued her studies in fashion design at the École supérieure des arts et techniques de la mode (ESMOD). Having shown a tropism for the world of art since her adolescence, the artist ultimately decided to free herself from the world of textiles to devote herself entirely to plastic creation.
Clara Ramírez Katz then continued her training at the Port Royal Academy and then at the Saint Roch Academy under the guidance of the founder Jean Bertholle (1909-1996), a painter and engraver representative of the heterogeneous movement, the New School of Paris.
