In Chromatic Fission, color becomes an active force — dynamic, unstable, and perpetually in motion. The composition vibrates with intersecting planes of luminous green, red, and blue, their energy amplified through fine linear structures that weave and fracture across the surface. The result is as if the spectrum itself were undergoing a process of fission.
This work extends the dialogue between abstraction and digital transformation. Every line… and fragment has a photographic origin, yet through complex layering and manipulation, the image transcends its source to become a meditation on perception and light. The eye is continually drawn between macro and micro — from the sweeping geometry of the whole to the intricate filigree of internal detail, inviting the viewer to experience color not as surface, but as a living phenomenon — radiant, volatile, and ever-changing.
Craig Blacklock is a photographer and printmaker with a deep-rooted background in large-format landscape photography, shaped by his photographer father, and decades spent exploring and photographing wilderness waterways. His artworks range from meticulously rendered traditional landscapes to highly-praised nudes in the landscape, to digitally-enhanced abstract prints derived from reflections in Lake Superior’s waves, blending photographic precision with painterly abstraction. Through complex layering and vivid details, he evokes a sense of wonder, reflection, and concern for nature’s fragility, inviting viewers to embark on transformative inner journeys. Craig is about to release his 20th book, most of which feature Lake Superior.
