About this artwork
This is a picture of soaking Korea's mainstream newspapers in water, grinded them with a mortar, mixed them with bond, and put them on the canvas and painted with chopsticks. Through this, I turned the language of the newspaper, which consists of words and pictures, into a world of nothingness and drew my picture on it. The surface of the work is only made with canvas and newspaper, and all the lines are made with chopsticks. I just hold one chopstick…
in my hand and draw the lines very slowly. This work will help improve the ability of contemplation to look into a world of blind will that language will never grasp. In a world of dimensions where gravity we know is applied differently, the action of gravity will occur in a different way than we know it. I think the same is true of language. We do not think there is a need to absoluteize the proposition presented in language.

Daesun Choi is an artist based in South Korea whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally, as well as in Japan, the United States, and Germany. His most recent abstract and semi-abstract compositions are made using newspapers, hanji, or paper strings. For Choi, the newspaper represents the secular world in which we live. However, he does not believe that this medium gives an accurate interpretation because of the inherent limitations of text language, whose meaning can be easily distorted.
