present and elsewhere. He has been thinking about something for a
long time, and you have walked into the middle of it.
The painting was built as a collision of temperatures. The background
burns in cadmium red and violet — heat, internal weather, the colour
of a room felt rather than seen. Against it, the… face is cool, almost
ill: emerald greens, ultramarine shadows, violet hollows under the
eyes. The skin is not painted as skin but as a mood — what a thought
looks like from the inside.
Heavy impasto and palette-knife marks keep the work physical. There
is no smoothing, no softening; the texture of the paint refuses to
let the viewer settle into comfort.
