About this artwork
Mediterranean Stories began along the coast itself, where I painted the sea directly from life using only a minimal set of tools. Stripped of horizon, figures, and place markers, the focus became pure water, light, and movement. Each work is not a depiction of location, but a distilled emotional memory of it.
Portofino reflects one such memory. The luminous turquoise surface and textured palette knife gestures evoke the quiet rhythm of the sea as… it is remembered rather than seen. It does not describe Portofino, it recalls it.
Each painting in this series is singular, rooted in a specific moment and place, making the body of work inherently scarce. The absence of fixed imagery allows the piece to open into the viewer’s own memories, while its tactile surface and light-responsive texture give it a strong physical presence within a space.
This is a work to live with, an atmosphere as much as an image.
Dani Phillip is a contemporary mixed-media painter and conceptual artist, who works primarily with oil, acrylic, and mixed media, developing his practice through rigorous studio experimentation. His technique centers on layered surfaces achieved through repetitive application, scraping, abrasion, and reconstruction with a dominant use of the knife, featuring restrained palettes and minimal yet forceful compositions that amplify psychological tension. By embracing reduction and structural clarity, he creates paintings that record their own history and presence. His work radiates a monumental quietude, inviting contemplation and commanding emotional gravity through its distilled force and profound sense of stillness.
