I painted the street maps of several cities I've visited blue, some scarred by terrorist attacks in recent years: Copenhagen, Paris, Brussels, Stockholm, Nice. I then hammered an aluminum container until it crumpled, transforming it into a visual metaphor for our wounded Europe, stuck in an economic, political, and social stalemate.
This work was created for the COMEL Contemporary Art Prize 2017, where I was among the thirteen finalists. The title… caused a misunderstanding: a curator thought it was a mistake—"The" doesn't have an apostrophe, "Europa" in English ends with an "e." But there was no mistake. The form of the title reveals my dual belonging: In to the / Europa. A dichotomy that expresses my Italian and European identity at the same time.
This work is a material photograph of our time.
Daniela Bellofiore is a visual artist who transforms matter into rebirth. Self-taught and a multi-media artist, she works with collages, three-dimensional assemblages, textured works, mixed media, and original techniques such as Volumetric Photography and Painting Volumetry. Her research explores the regeneration of matter and the potential of fragments: every scrap becomes a source, every remnant a new form. Through cuts and layering, she creates surfaces between painting and sculpture. Alongside her artistic production, she also engages in educational activities that value mistakes as a creative space.
