About this artwork
"Can Our Humanity Save Humanity?" is part of a series of canvases created in 2023. In this mixed media work, I worked on photographic prints, cutting and eliminating figures until I obtained the desired details: a crucial step in the thoughtful translation of photographic inspiration into painting, which marks the space for free creativity and interpretation. The selected photographs are combined (cropped), enlarged, glued, and reworked through painting,… which allows for the addition of details and the extraction of them from context.
Strong, bright colors fill the vast void surrounding the figures, absences recreated with acrylic paint, symbolizing memories of past presences. A desire for community and sharing between the past and the present. It speaks of something that was and is no longer there, of the need to still feel part of humanity, of the need to be there and feel the presence of others.
Daniela Di Lullo, born in Naples and working in Rome, uses painting, collage, and video, drawing on extensive exhibition experience and a multidisciplinary background. In her works, she experiments with techniques that suspend the human figure between presence and absence: evanescent silhouettes and incomplete presences dissolve into monochrome backgrounds, evoking traces and memories. Her poetic and lucid style guides the viewer toward a reflection on human irrationality, conveying emotions of suspension, melancholy, and liberation immersed in sounds and silences.
