About this artwork
I took inspiration from a poem called The Brook's Lullaby, by Wilhlem Muller, set to music composed by Franz Schubert.
The essence of the story is about a man who is rejected by his lover (The Miller's Daughter), and falls into the brook to die. The poem evokes the Brook's tender care of the dying man, urging the Miller's daughter to throw a scarf over the dying man's face.
"Throw into me, Your fine Scarf, So I can cover his eyes." It is this… moment my painting depicts.
The poem goes on 'Good Night, Good Night, Until everything wakes. Sleep away your joy, sleep away your pain. The full moon rises, the mist departs, and the sky above, how vast it is!"
I have recently experienced some significant losses in my life, and find this poem/music deeply affecting on a human level. The care, respect and love that the brook shows the dying man, along with the final optimistic reminder of the raw and abiding beauty of nature.
David Armitage, an Australian born artist, living in the UK, utilizes washes of acrylics on large-scale canvases. He masterfully combines abstract impressions with elements of music, adding depth and nuance in his color spectrum. His works exude an ethereal vibrancy, echoing profound emotion akin to holy shrines, hinting at his birthplace's landscape. His paintings, profoundly lit from within, inspire awe and reverence.
