About this artwork
My paintings took on their own life somehow. It wasn't a conscious thing, a bleak, post apocalyptic, barren, burnt out, abandoned landscape emerged.
Passing by swamps that are all over Ontario, where I live, seem to be a present theme in my work. Abandoned cabins, rapids, bays, forest fires and all those dead trees and forests I pass through, play a big part on my sub-conscious. Ontarios landscape forged from the ice age has produced amazing… lakes and rivers, scratched in between the forests and fields and all that will remain beautifully amazing, even after we are all long gone.
David Coulson, initially renowned as a tattoo artist in Ontario, has recently embraced painting, seeking a free-flowing and abstract approach that departs from his tattoo background. His technique is loose and spontaneous, with minimal detail, allowing each piece to evolve unpredictably and leaving much to the viewer’s imagination. Through evocative post-apocalyptic scenes of Ontario swamps, abandoned cabins, and wildfires, his works stir profound contemplation about nature’s resilience and the transient mark of humanity.
