About this artwork

This painting is one of Tycho’s urban works, which explore the physical, formal and/or psychological elements of cities. The works range from what could be interpreted as very positive, brightly-coloured renderings filled with optimistic vitality and a hint of nostalgia, to darker and more sombre depictions of sterile, deserted concrete canyons and industrial zones, with an ominous sense of isolation and alienation. For David, the intriguing aspect… of cities is the coexistence and duality of these seemingly disparate characteristics: the yin and yang of urban existence, so to speak. In this sense, the viewer is invited to interpret each painting in his or her own way.

David Tycho is a prize-winning Canadian artist whose paintings have been widely exhibited on a national level, as well as in the United States, Switzerland, Belgium, and Singapore. His art is distinguished by the exploration of varying subjects and differing artistic approaches. Inspired to create from nature, urban expansion, and the people he encounters, Tycho translates these influences onto canvas in an improvisational, expressive, and abstract manner. He paints using acrylics with brushes, palette knives, trowels, sticks, and rollers.
