About this artwork
In 2016 and 2017, Tycho became compelled to paint train tracks, stations, terminals, depots and other transport and distribution hubs. Perhaps it was because his studio is flanked by a rail yard, or because in his extensive travels he’d spent countless hours in and around such places. Or maybe it was the symbolic implications of train tracks converging and vanishing on a horizon line that intrigued him. The reason was not clear, but he followed his…

Each work generally began with reference to a photo or memory, but then, as usual in David's process, intuitive aesthetic impulses took over. Each painting consequently evolved into something not so much about a particular place, but represented, rather, more of an essence or archetype of such places, in varying degrees of abstraction.
There is a melancholy mood to each piece, but the meaning is open to interpretation.

David Tycho is a prize-winning Canadian artist whose paintings have been widely exhibited on a national level, as well as in the United States, Switzerland, Belgium, and Singapore. His art is distinguished by the exploration of varying subjects and differing artistic approaches. Inspired to create from nature, urban expansion, and the people he encounters, Tycho translates these influences onto canvas in an improvisational, expressive, and abstract manner. He paints using acrylics with brushes, palette knives, trowels, sticks, and rollers.
