About this artwork
Cities, and especially modern cities, are often laid out on a grid pattern for the sake of efficiency. The architecture is also designed to fit into this grid to maximize the space and leave as little non-revenue generating real estate as possible. The whole thing is a clinically rectangular mass, leaving little room for the rounding of forms and the aesthetically pleasing use of space. canyons have been created where little sunlight ever reaches the street. In this series, and in this painting, Tycho explores this urban grid. There are times, specially at night, when the grid is a dazzling display of colourful lights, and there are other times when it appears as an uninviting and alienating matrix. Tycho hopes to capture these disparate elements in this series.

David Tycho is a prize-winning Canadian artist whose paintings have been widely exhibited on a national level, as well as in the United States, Switzerland, Belgium, and Singapore. His art is distinguished by the exploration of varying subjects and differing artistic approaches. Inspired to create from nature, urban expansion, and the people he encounters, Tycho translates these influences onto canvas in an improvisational, expressive, and abstract manner. He paints using acrylics with brushes, palette knives, trowels, sticks, and rollers.
