Like Fontana, but also Mary Richardson, I opened my genitals to tear the canvas. My gesture is both pictorial and performative. This activation of the painting through the gaze aimed to open a perspective other than the one we have been referring to for over 150 years, and thus to make visible the point of view of the one whom the world looks at in her genitals. Exposed in this way beneath Courbet's painting, my genitals become a public, political,… and plastic form of sex. When I perform under "The Origin of the World," I rethink the model, and from this perspective, my gesture is closer to that of the painter than to that of the model.
Photo taken as part of the performance "Mirror of Origin" at the Musée d'Orsay in 2014. (Artist's proof)
*The artwork is framed as seen in the photo. Frame chosen by the artist.
* The final artwork is sold without the pixelated portion.
Luxembourg-born Deborah de Robertis is a performance and video artist with over 15 years of experience. Her provocative and transgressive technique is in the spirit of artists such as Valie Export, exploring themes of feminist art. Her work reveals a new interpretation of the works of old masters, where nudity is the aesthetic and political interpretation. Her works challenge the male gaze and provoke critical reflection on the established hierarchy of power.
