PAINTED BY JAFR - In 1603, the Dutch captured a Portuguese ship full of Chinese porcelain. White porcelain with blue painting quickly became very popular in the Netherlands. Because it was too expensive to ship from China, the Dutch city of Delft started producing 'Delft Blue' as a cheap alternative to Chinese porcelain. This painting shows a mix of Chinese and Dutch porcelain eggs, both decorated with and producing birds.
The Chinese red bird as… one of the four celestial beings that protect the borders of the world (along with the Blue Dragon, White Tiger and Black Turtle). The Dutch Swallow as a symbol of hope, innovation and exploration.
To this day, both countries are very successful in international trade.
