I have done a series of marble sculptures pertaining to bats.
Bats are the only mammals capable of true, sustained flight. They are classified as mammals because they are warm-blooded, have fur, and bear live young which they nurse with milk.
This is a sculpture of an embryo of a black mastiff bat in the womb of its mother. This sculpture is a true representation of a bat and the position it lays in. They lay in the womb with their developing… wings covering their face like hands. Eventually those handlike stuctures grow into wings.
I like to think this bat sculpture is “Dreaming of Flight” he will someday partake in!
Denis Yanashot is a sculptor with a strong foundation in art education, specializing in direct stone carving, mixed media assemblages, and reliefs integrating found and natural materials. His techniques range from traditional hand-carving and meticulous polishing of marble to the inventive use of scrap metal, bone, and river detritus, blending representational forms with abstraction and non-objectivity. Yanashot’s art channels the inspiration of nature and personal experience, evoking wonder, curiosity, and an appreciation for transformation, urging viewers to reflect on the boundaries between absurdity, reality, and the spiritual.
