About this artwork
This work represents the women of Lanzarote, the women of Lanzarote, who, like so many Canarian women, managed to make a living with very little. They found strength in scarcity. They found dignity in hardship.
Her body isn't a dress, it's a prickly pear leaf: a symbol of resistance. The white dots on it evoke the cochineal, a tiny insect that was the island's economic engine.
Between fishing and drought, his gaze reflects fatigue, but also the… strength of those who, under the sun and wind, sustained life.
Painted on the back of an old canvas, this work also speaks of transformation: of how what seemed worn can become a living memory.
I've painted all my life, since I was a child, as a vital necessity. My training isn't academic, but intuitive and constant: I've painted on whatever was at hand, from papers to doors to the back of canvases. For years, I experienced painting as something intimate, almost like a diary. In 2025, after a personal loss, I felt it was time to share my work. I paint what isn't always seen, but is felt: a contained emotion, an invisible gesture, a truth sensed in the depths of a gaze. Now I'm beginning to show my work for the first time.
