About this artwork

This series of portraits explores the limits of perception and how visual impairment influences our view of the world.
The figures are not depicted realistically - their faces split, overlap, and dissolve into multiple layers. Instead of sharp lines and clear forms, a multi-perspective image emerges, full of shifts and afterimages.
The portraits are therefore not singular representations, but an attempt to capture a fragmented,… blurry reality that makes up the subject’s character.
Fairly distinct outlines give the whole composition a graphic or illustrative quality. Thanks to this, despite the overlapping forms, the image does not fall apart, and the face remains recognizable.
Inspirations from Cubism and abstract art intertwine with a deeply personal experience of seeing - where what may seem “distorted” becomes the true image of the world, as perceived through a flawed eye.

« It took me four years to paint like Rafael, but I've been learning all my life to paint like a child. »
Dorota Kwiatkowska is an artist based in Poland whose paintings have been exhibited nationally. She usually paints people based on earlier sketches (created on a computer, tablet, or paper). Her work is not limited to the motif of women and men — she creates series of artworks to tell a story. In a geometric way, she tries to "narrate" it. Since her school days (she is an interior designer by education), she has continued designing. Mixing styles allows her to keep exploring and discovering new aspects of art. She also enjoys painting drapery, light, and shadow, as they bring an abstract element to her works. These geometric textiles are not always immediately visible at first glance.
