Threshold IV is an ancylic painted linen collage, with silk, cotton, and charcoal. The imagery extends around a 3" border for stretching on a gallery wrap stretchers, or can hang loose. Overall size 36" x 54". Ships rolled. Stretchers not included.
"Threshold IV" represents butterfly's moment of breaking out of her chrysalis. Veiled pearlescent paint and silks evoke the tearing away of parts unknown, as butterfly chooses her new life. Remnants… of blossoms, pulling back the veil reveal butterfly with her wet wings preparing to become herself.
With a trowel-size palette knife and willow twigs, Dorothy Fagan expresses the rejuvenating relationship with her beloved garden by the pond. Each painting begins in the garden as deep emotional colors stroke passions with thick impasto paint. As her botanical essences take form, the artist’s hand draws automatic writing from earth spirit with willow charcoal.
The drawing painting fusion enacts the human nature connection. Colorful emotions grounded by charred wood drawings creates the color alchemy, repeating nature’s restorative process of renewal and rejuvenation.
Dorothy Fagan holds a B.F.A. in printmaking and painting from East Carolina University, and completed a ten- year mentorship with Robert Bowers Mayo in American Masters Painting. Fagan's paintings are collected by hospitals, institutions, and corporations in the United States and abroad, including Musee de La Grande Vigne, City University of New York, Camp Lejeune Mental Health Center, and Vir Biotechnology.
