About this artwork
I see and draw analogies between the snail and the painter; both mark makers leaving imprints of their movement behind. The colors I use signal to the
spectator that the trail to follow is one that is inviting, clearly visible, accessible and that most importantly, leads one to a happy place, to one’s destiny and purpose. Snail’s communicate through the trails they leave behind, created by their feet. My creative practice utilizes painting, drawing,… printmaking, performance, sculpture and installation as tools to search for joy. A joy that is nuanced and complex. The making of the work is me following a snail’s trail. The realized piece is a map of the snail’s movement. The snail in this work is a magical and powerful spirit guide that guides the figure towards her life, destiny and purpose. That journey is part of being deeply human. The snail here also represents the Yoruba Orisha, Obatala, a being that has been supporting my Ori (head or consciousness) through a practice Ifa.
My name is Eilen Itzel Mena and I am an Afro-Dominican American artist and writer from the South Bronx currently based in London, UK. In 2017 I was awarded a BA in Fine Art from the USC Roski School of Art and Design. In June 2024 I received my MFA in Painting from the UCL Slade School of Fine Art. I have shown my work internationally and have also received various artist grants and awards for my practice. My visual arts practice is deeply rooted in documenting a femme afro-diasporic intersectional experience. I focus on depicting growth and transformation through an understanding of community, ancestry, purpose and the connection between the child self and the adult self. I am interested in investigating the way that folks in the African Diaspora are in pursuit of joy as well as their personal and communal purpose through using a variety of materials. I use painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, installation and performance as tools for the pursuit of joy.
