About this artwork
This small oil painting was created en plein air during a walk near my home in Sweden, in December.
Despite the season, winter had not yet arrived — the snow was still absent, and the landscape remained in a state of prolonged autumn, lingering almost until Christmas.
The Swedish forest is shown in muted, earthy tones, with bare trees, damp ground, and soft, overcast light. Painted directly from life, the work captures this in-between moment — a… quiet pause between seasons, when autumn refuses to fully give way to winter.
The miniature format emphasizes intimacy and immediacy, preserving a fleeting, everyday encounter with the landscape rather than an idealized view.
Ekaterina Dutkevich is a painter who primarily works with oil on canvas and paper, drawing from a lifetime of artistic self-reflection and emotional exploration. She blends expressive brushwork, bold colors, and symbolic elements—balancing realism and expressionism—to explore themes of femininity, emigration, and intimate moments of everyday life. Her works radiate tenderness and vulnerability, inviting viewers to connect deeply with universal emotions surrounding identity, nostalgia, and belonging.
