About this artwork
In this work, I attempt to make visible the restless nature of humankind. A constant urge for more, a hunger that rarely finds peace. At the same time, the question arises of the space of stillness: What can emerge when we pause?
Between movement and rest lies a moment of transition. Like a caterpillar retreating before transforming, this image carries within it the potential for unfolding. A quiet process that needs time to one day reveal itself… as something new.
The work moves between restlessness and stillness, capturing precisely this fleeting moment in which change becomes possible.
Elena Schertler is an artist from Vorarlberg who studies Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. On roller skates, she draws fine charcoal lines across the canvas, traces that make time and physical presence visible. In a world dominated by images and algorithmic structures, she creates spaces for slowness, perception, and imagination. Using fragmented, algorithmically influenced visual worlds, she explores how images are created, remembered, and passed on. "To write new stories, we need new images," says Schertler.
