About this artwork
In the 21st century, women and girls continue to be devalued and oppressed in numerous countries and communities. Their voices are systematically suppressed, their fundamental rights are violated, and their authority is undermined. Under the pretence of male-dominated legal systems, they endure disrespect, humiliation, arbitrary arrest, torture, and sexual assault.
We are witnessing a societal femicide. In the face of this, activists are engaging… in small acts of resistance. Women, particularly those living in exile, write slogans on walls, calling for an end to this gender apartheid and asserting their fundamental rights to sustenance, employment, and liberty.
In this oil painting, I have employed an expressionistic style to delve into the core of human emotion. I aim to honour the resilience, courage, and tenacity of all the women and girls who struggle to live their lives within these oppressive societies, and I express my fervent hope for an end to this ongoing nightmare.
Eleni Pappa Tsantili, a multifaceted painter and sculptor, crafts art rooted in the spontaneity of her gestures and the richness of nature's inspiration. Embracing a vivid, interactive palette, she layers oils and acrylics atop structural mediums, leaving the echoes of her process—a symphony of sweeping brushstrokes and elemental texturing—inherent in her dynamic works. Her art exudes passion, inviting viewers to feel the unfettered, raw emotions that pulsate within each piece.
