About this artwork
I've always been fascinated by the great poet Alda Merini. I've always considered her a GREAT poet.
This is an intense and expressive portrait (in my opinion) dedicated to Alda Merini, one of the most beloved figures of twentieth-century Italian literature.
The work blends facial realism with the style of Abstract Expressionism. Bold, textured brushstrokes in vibrant hues—pink, orange, red, and yellow—traverse the poet's face, particularly across… her eyes and hair. These bursts of color seem to evoke the vital force, torment, and brilliance of the "poetess of the Navigli," transforming suffering into energy.
Emilio Ventura uses oil and acrylic on canvas, drawing on his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and an apprenticeship with Maestro La Rocca. His style veers between material abstraction and intense figurative expressionism, with layered colors and bold brushstrokes that lend depth and a vibrant three-dimensionality. His works are intimate and evocative, reflecting the deepest human emotions, addressing themes of love, grief, and rebirth, inviting the viewer to reflect on the sacredness and complexity of existence.
