About this artwork
In this work, I explore the energy of preparation and the reward of creative discipline. I painted this piece while training for my first live painting competition, using it as a vehicle to sharpen my speed and spontaneity. The thick, impasto-style bursts of orange, yellow, and green represent the sudden, vibrant ideas that emerge when you are pushed to your creative limits. By setting this energetic bouquet against a muted, atmospheric background,… I am documenting the balance required to remain grounded while navigating the pressure of a live performance. This process ultimately prepared me for the unknown, leading to my second-place win at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. To me, this vessel is more than a study; it is a symbol of success and the beauty that blooms from rigorous practice. It stands as a testament to a pivotal moment in my career when I learned that preparing for the worst often leads to the most triumphant results.
Akolo Emmanuel Olusegun is a Nigerian-born, Niagara-based contemporary artist who transitioned from a background in Civil Engineering to a profound practice in figurative painting. Blending realism with impressionism, he utilizes acrylics, charcoals, and his own fingerprints to explore themes of identity, social justice, and human resilience. His work is characterized by earthy tones, bold contrasts, and expressive brushwork that documents personal and collective struggles.
Recognized by Saatchi Art as one of the "23 Artists to Collect in 2023"—the only Nigerian selected—he also won "Best in Show" at the 2025 Niagara Falls City Awards. His art has been exhibited internationally and is featured globally via digital licensing on LG Gallery TV+ and Samsung Frame TV. Held in private collections from Canada to China, Akolo’s work serves as a tool for empathy, fostering connection across racial and cultural divides.
