About this artwork
How Bad Could It Be captures a profound moment of careful, almost ritualistic preparation before a young man steps out to face the world. The subject is engrossed in the simple, deliberate act of using a traditional chewing stick, yet his focus is fixed entirely on a horizon beyond the frame. His intense, questioning gaze reveals a mind actively assessing the day’s potential for hardship and success, portraying the daily necessity of courage and… the internal accounting required to survive in an unpredictable environment.
The composition utilizes a vibrant blue sky and rich, high-contrast light that illuminates the subject’s skin, creating a sharp tension with the visible resolve in his expression. This contrast suggests a hope that must be constantly tempered by reality. By highlighting a small, grounding act of personal care, the work honors the quiet, conscious decision to face the unknown.
