About this artwork
In this piece, I explore the delicate boundary between vulnerability and self-preservation. By raising the subject’s hands to obscure the eyes, I am capturing a universal human instinct: the creation of a protective barrier against an overwhelming external world. I used a palette of deep teals and forest greens to establish a contemplative, natural space that contrasts sharply with the crisp white of the shirt. This juxtaposition emphasizes the figure’s…
presence while highlighting the tension of their withdrawal. My application of bold, expressive brushstrokes reflects the emotional energy required to maintain this shield. This work is my invitation to look past the guarded exterior and consider the rich, unseen narratives we carry in our moments of solitude. It is a study on the quiet strength found when we choose to seek solace within ourselves, honoring the emotions we shield from the public eye.

Akolo Emmanuel Olusegun is a Nigerian-born, Niagara-based contemporary artist who transitioned from a background in Civil Engineering to a profound practice in figurative painting.
