About this artwork
I painted The Boy I Left Behind to look at memory, growth, and how we change as we get older. The painting shows a young boy in the front looking away, and an older youth looking back toward an open window with a bright blue sky. This shows a conversation between the past and the future, capturing the moment we look back at who we used to be.
I used strong, bright colors on the skin to show the "inner fire" and strength of both figures. The open… window is a symbol of hope, showing the big world that waits for us outside. This work is about staying strong as we grow, showing the quiet lines that connect who we were with who we are becoming.
