About this artwork
In this painting, I depict an expressionistic, surreal-looking scene in which several shadowy figures can be recognized. Yellow tones dominate, against which I have rendered the black contours and shading with charcoal. The distorted proportions, the raw strokes, and the emotional expressiveness are reminiscent of Expressionist works.
The mask-like, dreamlike figures and the intangible scenery clearly point toward surrealism. The predominant yellow… and black combination creates an intense, eerie atmosphere, reminiscent of a nightmare. The grotesque faces, the unclear spatial depth, and the strong emotional expression are intended to create both unease and fascination.
I have deliberately refrained from providing any personal or further biographical information. Esberg is a project name. It is not about real names, origins, or history – it is solely about images, colors, and textures. My work is predominantly created intuitively, physically, and often impulsively – with a palette knife, brush, and other tools; structure, contrast, and dynamics are central aspects. I understand painting as my own dialogue with the surface, not as the expression of a personal narrative. And ultimately, my paintings can and should speak for themselves and have an immediate impact on interested viewers. For me, the only thing that counts is the pleasurable desire to surprise with my art through the interplay of colors, shapes, and textures, to invite my own interpretations, and, last but not least, to avoid any boredom.
