About this artwork
When I Was Young is part of the Longing for Freedom series and depicts a young woman in quiet contemplation, accompanied by a butterfly—an eternal symbol of transformation and hope. Her gentle gaze and posture express not only the grace of youth but also a deep, unspoken desire to break free from expectations that once defined her world.
The butterfly, floating near her presence, represents the freedom she longed for—the freedom to be herself, to… live without prescribed roles. The soft tones and delicate brushwork reflect a time of innocence, but also of longing.
This work draws from my personal memory and cultural context as a Korean woman who witnessed and experienced the silent burdens often placed upon women in traditional society. The past is not condemned here, but lovingly acknowledged—and from that place, the soul begins to breathe.
