About this artwork
“Walking on the Moon” is what I called the work. For me, walking on the moon means having your head in the clouds, being dreamy, escaping the greyness of everyday life, entering a fantasy world.
I wanted to express this mood, which I often experience myself, of simply dreaming about a day, using different shades of blue, copper and off-white. The colors lighten in the upper area, the dream becomes light and airy, you are floating on cloud nine.… Multi-layered applications of color underline the effect of lightness. I worked with small pieces of paper that are color-coordinated but still give a feeling of liveliness and depth in the picture. The surface is rough and three-dimensional, the collage elements sometimes appear, sometimes they are hidden with brushstrokes and colors applied with a roller. This is my absolute favorite picture and I have an emotional connection to it.
Ewa Martens is a versatile artist known for her intuitive and experimental approach to abstract art. Using acrylic paints, texture pastes, inks, fabrics, and other materials, she creates a lively, spontaneous dialogue on canvas—playful yet precise.
Three key moments have shaped her artistic career: a monumental commission for the Miniaturland in Leer with a work over 10 meters wide; a major solo exhibition in 2018 at the Bremen Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians with 91 abstract works spread over three floors; and the invitation to participate in the 2023 Florence Biennale – a significant international recognition of her work.
Her works evoke strong emotional responses and leave room for infinite interpretations. Her art is both a journey into the unknown and an expression of her inner life—visionary, dynamic, and always open to new challenges on an international level.
