About this artwork
A raw and expressive portrait of Diogenes, the ancient Greek philosopher who rejected social conventions and embraced radical simplicity.
Rendered with thick impasto and gestural brushwork, this painting explores the tension between wisdom and decay, intellect and instinct. The fragmented anatomy and distorted features reflect a mind detached from illusion — a figure who chose truth over comfort.
Earth tones, bruised pinks, and cold blues collide… across the surface, creating a tactile, almost sculptural presence. The materiality of the paint becomes part of the meaning: rough, unapologetic, and direct — like Diogenes himself.
This work belongs to a contemporary figurative language influenced by expressionism and philosophical abstraction, where the human face becomes a territory of thought rather than representation.
Félix Rubio Sanz is a Spanish painter with a background in Philosophy, Art History, and Aesthetics. His work is created using oil, acrylic, pigments, and textured materials, combining expressive figuration with emotional intensity and gestural experimentation.
Influenced by masters such as Goya, Turner, Egon Schiele, and Lucian Freud, his paintings explore psychological tension, fragility, memory, and contemporary human disconnection through a highly personal anti-realist visual language.
His work has been featured in exhibitions and cultural events including the RTVE Pop Eye Awards 2026 official poster presentation and the BRA Biennale in Italy.
Félix Rubio's paintings seek a balance between material force and symbolic atmosphere, creating spaces where emotion, silence, and metaphor coexist.
