About this artwork
This painting explores the notion of the border as a construct of perception. A central vertical split runs through the canvas, symbolizing
a transition — from the external to the internal, from what is observed to what is felt. This visual “corridor” is composed of fragments of landscapes, textures, symbols, and lines — as if reality and psyche merge into a continuous flow. Figures at the base look into the distance
— toward the sea, the shore,… the horizon
— but at the same time, their gaze passes through the internal fabric of the painting.
The viewer is invited to see not only the outer landscape, but how it is filtered inward — through memory, emotion, the body, culture, the unconscious. A face embedded in a tree trunk is neither
a portrait nor a character. It represents
perception itself, integrated into the structure of the world. It does not “watch” — it is perception, dissolved into the visual stream.
Moving deftly between oil, acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media, Fatima Erkenova incorporates her experiences in journalism, psychology, and psychotherapy into her artistry. Firmly situated at the crossroads of psychological painting and conscious abstraction, her artworks speak the universal language of form, color, rhythm, and structure to express shifts in consciousness and internal processes. Erkenova paints to echo the human journey towards self-awareness and freedom, with each stroke bearing the weight of personal boundaries being acknowledged, and often obliterated, in a resonating dance of color and thought.
