About this artwork
In a wild valley of the Luberon, the Arch of Bausset raises its heroic silhouette against a background of immaculate blue sky.
A tree stands guard before the passage, escorted by an army of bushes.
Its gnarled trunk firmly clings to the rocks, it sends its slender and graceful branches towards the sky, and its clusters of leaves sparkle in the sun.
The stone walls, the rocks, the undergrowth… everything is scorched by the powerful midday light,… only the ochres resist, the greens have disappeared, the reds or yellows have taken refuge in the shadows of the overhangs or the fissures, the bark of the trunks or branches takes on discreet lichen hues.
The drawing that served as the basis for the painting was made on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 3 p.m.
Dry pastel on reconstituted wood panel
Background and temporary protective plexiglass, hanging ring

« My first artist's workshop was outdoors, on the beach and in sandcastles, at that age when everything is allowed and when one can work freely on shapes or colors. »
François Cusson is an experienced artist based in France whose paintings have been exhibited nationally and in Austria. For him, there are a few extraordinary days throughout each year, "when the air is so pure, so crisp that everything is transformed: the contours are sharper, the colors more subtle, the world is brighter and more luminous". Such days inspire Cusson to capture those magic and fleeting moments.
