About this artwork
I remember him giving me permission—Henri Matisse rarely allowed anyone into his studio—and telling me I could stand behind him, and above all, in silence, but that I couldn't take notes or sketch. I watched him work for hours, never being able to see his canvases in their entirety, only in pieces, capturing details here and there. Only many years later was I able to put down on paper the shapes and colors I had so long tried to fix in my memory… so they wouldn't fade. They are small still lifes, painted just as I remembered seeing them in some corner of the Master's canvas. I dedicate them with affection to Him, AMAtisse.
Francesca Lagonia primarily uses watercolor on paper, drawing on a background that blends classical studies, architecture, and a deep, self-taught passion for drawing. Her painting is figurative and stems from a careful observation of everyday life: she creates small thematic series exploring still lifes, urban views, and countless plant forms, incorporating elements inspired by Matisse. Her works, gestural and full of textural experimentation, invite the viewer to discover new perspectives on their own ordinariness, transforming the observation of reality into emotion and wonder.
