About this artwork
This series explores the moment when a warning turns into a confrontation. The red flag, a symbol of danger and challenge, takes center stage. At the side, the body of a bull appears, partially visible, while its head breaks through the flag and tears the canvas. What first seemed abstract suddenly becomes concrete. The text PLAYING WITH THE RED FLAG. SAY HELLO TO THE BULL balances between humor and seriousness: whoever waves a red flag summons a… bull. The bull is both powerful and unexpectedly present, almost ironic. Together, the four works create a stop-motion effect, with the bull’s tail moving, among other things.
« In my art, I transform discarded materials into bold, playful pieces that invite humor, chaos, and interaction. »
Frank Willems creates ever-evolving art that blends urban art, pop art, and neo-expressionism. Working intuitively, he plays with visual language and text, balancing humor and seriousness, chaos and structure. Reclaimed wood forms the foundation of his work, adding raw character to his colorful compositions filled with cartoonish figures, skeletons, and animals. Nostalgia, memories, and social themes are transformed into a visual language that is both familiar and alienating. His use of an inverted ‘e’ and crossed-out words sparks curiosity and invites deeper reflection. Humor, satire, and self-mockery are central as he challenges viewers to look beyond the cheerful surface. Increasingly, he integrates interactive elements, allowing the audience and environment to shape the artwork. His pieces have been exhibited internationally and auctioned by Christie’s, and are held in collections around the world.
