About this artwork
Arnold Bucklin's Isle of the Dead 1880 has always fascinated me and forms the basis of several of my works. While many viewers see isolation and threat in my work, I see it more as a romantic island in a vast sea, a safe haven, a mystical place to linger and reflect, a place of peace, a retreat from the overly fast pace of our world. With its rooms and stairs carved into the rock, an eternal place for playful exploration, a mountain to climb to explore…
the view into the distance. In my work I metaphysically combine the surreal with the real.
