About this artwork
Kiatu = Swahili = shoe. In a country where shoes are not a given.
I meet unusual people and situations on my travels. Unusual situations that make you think. A young woman in Tanzania wears a shoe on her head. She carries shoes on her back, in front of her chest and in her hands. She is a street vendor of used shoes.
My art brings the seemingly absurd situation to our attention. What is everyday in one place becomes absurd in another. The young… African woman proudly wears used shoes from Europe on her head with a smile. The picture provides an insight into the life of the street vendor in Tanzania. In Africa, our old shoes start a new life.
