A freely interpreted, painterly rendering of the Schiller bust by Johann Heinrich Dannecker (visit to the Schiller House in Weimar, September 2023). The work transforms the classical bust into an expressive, color-charged context.
Gerd Zimmermann – Schiller in Weimar
In the fall of 2023, I visited the Schiller House in Weimar—a place that evokes both spirit and history. There, I photographed the famous Schiller bust by… Johann Heinrich Dannecker. Based on this classical formal language, I developed my work "Schiller in Weimar" as an independent image on a gesso panel. The marble impression of the bust is retained, but it is interrupted by an expressive, abstract background.
The calm white of the figure enters into a powerful color dialogue with the surroundings – as if Schiller’s thinking were radiating into our time.

Gerd Zimmermann was born on October 23, 1943, in Allenstein, East Prussia. After training as a poster painter, he began his artistic career in commercial graphics, set design, and type design. He completed his artistic training at the "fa-school-amsterdam-osdorp" in the Netherlands. He was influenced by American artists such as Albert Dorne and Norman Rockwell.
Zimmermann increasingly developed a remarkable artistic productivity. He is more active than ever and has made a name for himself on the international art market. His works have been exhibited in cities such as Berlin, Rome, Malta, and Shanghai.
Zimmermann's international recognition is particularly noteworthy. His works resonate with art lovers in the US and China, underscoring his global relevance. (Hamburger Abendblatt)
